The Film Fund
The mayor of Poznań announced his intent to establish a regional film fund in 2007. The agreement between municipal and regional authorities was signed in September 2008 and two weeks later the first edition of the Wielkopolska Film Support Competition was announced, with Estrada Poznańska responsible for its organization. Six applications were submitted – five documentaries and one animation. Two projects were subsequently financed – the documentary Zrabowane dzieciństwo by Jacek Kubiak and animated film Jedyne udane powstanie by Grzegorz Grześkowiak.

Budget
The regional and municipal authorities allocated 1 million PLN (260,000 EUR) to supporting film production in 2008. They have also announced that in 2009 and following years this support for film production will continue based on the same criteria, aims and financial conditions. Details will be put forth as soon as the current edition of the competition is closed. Auxiliary activities are in preparation, including the publication of a regional guide for filmmakers.

Entry Conditions
The purpose of the competition is supporting production of feature films, TV series, documentaries and animated films. Financing is available to projects related to the region through subject matter, shooting locations or participation of residents and businesses from the region. The financial participation of Estrada Poznańska cannot exceed 50% of the budget, with at least 10% of the budget being covered by funds other than public funding. Furthermore, at least 50% of the budget must be spent in the Wielkopolska region.

In assessing applications, experts focus on a few key criteria: relating to the region, artistic, humanist and ethical values of the project, structuring of the text, complexity of characters, quality of dialogue, innovativeness, originality, filmography of the director and producer (artistic and financial results), the financial situation and expected economic results of the project.

Wielkopolska
The region lies in western Poland, along the Warta river. It is considered to be the cradle of Polish nationality. But it is more than the birthplace of the Polish state. Poznań is home to the Muza cinema – Poland’s oldest running cinema, where the first screenings took place less than one year after the Lumière brothers launched their film in Paris. One of the first Polish films, recently found in the Bois d’Arcy film archive, dates back to 1908 and was filmed in Wielkopolska.

The history and beauty of the region were immortalized in the historical series Najdłuższa wojna nowoczesnej Europy and in the films of Filip Bajon. In Biedrusk (near Poznań), the director Jerzy Hoffman filmed several scenes of his blockbuster With Fire and Sword. The town of Kwilcz is home to the foundation established by Jan A.P. Kaczmarek.

Landscape
The region is dominated by lowlands with rolling hills, vast river valleys, lakes, meadows, forests and wetlands. The northern part of the region is home to almost 800 lakes, and nearly 26% of the total area of the region is forested. The most interesting natural sites include Morasko – home to craters resulting from a meteor crash, and Rogalin – Europe’s largest preserve of oak trees.

Cities and Sites
The region has 109 cities, the largest of which are Poznań, Konin, Ostrów Wielkopolski, Piła, Gniezno and Kalisz, Poland’s oldest city. Examples of pre-Romanesque and Romanesque architecture from the 10th century A.D. can be found in Poznań, Gniezno, Kalisz and in archeological preserves in Giecz and Ostrów Lednicki. Poznań is also home to Ostrów Tumski – an ancient fort on the Warta river which houses the tombs of the first Polish kings, a spectacular church and Renaissance town hall. Other key sites in Poznań include the Castle District, and art nouveau townhouses in the district of Jeżyce.

The entire region is studded with castles, palaces and manor houses of varying ages and architectural styles. It is also home to a number of sanctuaries and monasteries, as well as significant examples of wooden sacral and secular architecture, including Poland’s only wooden town hall in Sulmierzyce. Other attractions in the region include the salt mine in Kłodawa, old breweries in Poznań and Czarnków, steam engine factory in Wolsztyn, weaver house in Chodzież and several narrow gauge railways.
