Małopolska
The region is located in southern Poland and borders on Slovakia in the south. Thanks to its many unique sites, Małopolska is one of Poland’s major tourist destinations. Apart from many manor houses, churches, castle ruins and picturesque villages, the region is also home to ancient forests, wild mountain river, breathtaking rock formations and high mountains. The Polish Tatra mountains were featured as Kashmir region in the film Fanaa. This film was shot in a number of locations around Małopolska. The region and its possibly most picturesque area, known as Jura Krakowsko-Częstochowska, were also featured in many Polish films. A number of scenes for Andrzej Wajda’s Katyn were shot in Krakow. The city has also drawn attention from a number of filmmakers from around the world, including Steven Spielberg with his Schindler’s List, and most recently Petr Zelenka and his project entitled The Karamazov Brothers.

Landscape
The region consists mainly of highlands and mountains. The highest peak in the region is also Poland’s highest mountain – the Rysy peak in the Tatra mountains – the highest mountains between the Alps and the Caucasus. The region is also home to the Pieniny mountains, the picturesque Gorce and the gentle slopes of Beskid. The local mountains abound in deep caves, the largest of which is 824 metres deep. The most famous Łokietek and Ciemna grottos are located in the Jura region and are part of the Ojców National Park. This park is also home to many other interesting rock formations, some of which are up to 150 million years old. Finally, the Małopolska region is the site of Poland’s only desert, known as Pustynia Błędowska.

Cities and Sites
The region has 57 cities, the largest of which are Kraków, Tarnów, Nowy Sącz, Nowy Targ and Zakopane. The Małopolska region is also home to half of Poland’s UNESCO World Heritage sites, including Krakow’s Historic Centre, the Wieliczka Salt Mine, the Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp, the Mannerist Architectural and Park Landscape Complex and Pilgrimage Park in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, and the Wooden Churches of Southern Poland (in Binarowa, Dębno, Lipnica Murowana and Sękowa). Other significant architectural sites include the Benedictine Monastery in Tyniec and castles in Pieskowa Skała and Niedzica. Some of the most picturesque villages in the region are Porąbka Uszewska, Biecz, Krynica-Zdrój, Lanckorona and, perhaps most famously, Zakopane.

The best known historic city in the region is Krakow. Its most famous site is Wawel, which houses the Royal Castle and Wawel Cathedral, both excellent examples of Renaissance architecture. Other key sites are located in and around the main marketplace. These include the Sukiennice, the old Town Hall and Gothic basilica. The marketplace is surrounded by a number of historic townhouses. Krakow is also home to the old Jewish district known as Kazimierz, known for its narrow streets, old townhouses, historic shops, restaurants and synagogues.
