The Film Fund
The Gdynia Film Fund was established by the mayor of Gdynia in September 2008. The municipal authorities have placed the administration of the fund in the hands of the cultural organization called Centrum Kultury w Gdyni.
The first competition for the support of film production was announced in min-January 2009.

Before the Film Fund was established, the municipal authorities of Gdynia had already co-financed the production of Miasto z morza by Andrzej Kotkowski. This film is based on a novel that tells the story of how the city was established. It will premiere during the next edition of the Polish Film Festival, which takes place annually in Gdynia.

Budget
As a result of its first competition for supporting film production, in 2009 the Gdynia Film Fund granted support to five projects in the total amount of 700,000 PLN (175,000 EUR). The 2010 budget has been increased to 1 million PLN (250,000 EUR). Funding is available to one or more projects and the amount of funding may vary between projects. The municipal authorities have stated that, depending on the success of produced films, the budget of the Film Fund in future years will continue to increase.

Entry Conditions
The Film Fund provides support for feature and documentary projects. Preference is given to projects that directly promote the city of Gdynia, its landscape, history or related maritime themes and have a positive impact on the local market.

A key condition is the timely application for financing and compliance with requirements as specified in the regulations of the Gdynia Film Fund. Other conditions include the subject matter and range of promoting the city during production and distribution of the film. The artistic merit of the project is also taken into consideration.
In 2010 Gdynia Film Fund supported six projects: Czarny Czwartek by Antoni Krauze, Ludzie Gdyni by Mirosław Bork, Kazimierz Prószyński - geniusz nr 129957, Zimowy Ojciec by Johannes Schmid, Blizny by Ewa Stępniewicz and Optymiści by Kryspin Pluta.

Gdynia
Gdynia is a sea port located on the Baltic Sea. Together with Gdańsk and Sopot, Gdynia forms an area known as Tri-City. The city is one of Poland’s youngest, albeit fastest growing urban areas. Merely 90 years ago, it was nothing but a fishing village – today, the city is home to 250,000 inhabitants.

A number of unique sites are to be found in Gdynia – from picturesque coastline and vast greenery to large industrial areas. The city is also known for its annual Polish Film Festival that has been organized here for over 20 years. Every September, the cream of the Polish film industry visits Gdynia to take part in this event.

Landscape
Gdynia’s location is also the division mark between two geographical regions, and as such, the city’s landscape is diverse – from the steep hills of Kępa Oksywska and Kępa Redłowska, to the cliffs, valleys and two small rivers. Nearly 50% of Gdynia’s total land area is forested and forms part of the Tri-City Landscape Park.

The City and its Sites
Gdynia is one of Poland’s youngest cities and a very unique place. Its central district is Europe’s only major city centre to be built entirely within the 1920s and 1930s. The centre of Gdynia is home to Modernist townhouses and public buildings. The unique aspect of Gdynia’s architecture shows maritime influence, reflected in round windows, oblong constructions or outdoor stairways. Most of these buildings were designed by Poland’ top architects and today serve as some of the best examples of Modernism in architecture.

Remnants of the old village life can still be found in Gdynia. Historic churches, inns, huts and farmhouses from the late 19th and early 20th century can be seen in the districts of Wielki Kack, Oksywa and Orłowo. The last of these is also home to the Kurhaus and Aldershorst buildings, which date back to the early 19th century. The district of Kamienna Góra is the site of many historic villas.

Gdynia is known for its walking areas along the coast. The foremost of these is the South Pier (Molo Południowe), where two historic ships are moored. This area is also home to the Gdynia Aquarium. Passenger ships and water trams depart from the South Pier to Hel, Jastarnia, Gdańsk, Sopot and Kaliningrad. Other walking areas include the promenade known as Bulwar Nadmorski and several miles of sandy beaches. The sea port in the French Pier (Nabrzeże Francuskie) was the original port for Trans-Atlantic voyages of Polish ships.

The northern district of Babie Doły is the site of ruins of a Nazi torpedo station.
